Reps. Green, Ryan headed to Afghanistan in August
Wisconsin reps. will be part of small bipartisan congressional delegation sent by House speaker to meet with central Asian leaders, visit troops, assess situation
WASHINGTON – U.S. Reps. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) and Mark Green (R-Green Bay) will travel to central Asia in late August, where they plan to visit U.S. forces stationed in the region and meet with area leaders.
"We’re heading to Afghanistan because there’s work to be done," Green said. "We have a couple of very important goals. We’re going to take a look at things on the ground and talk with the key players in the war on terrorism to get a better view of what’s happening there. We’re also carrying a message from all the folks in Wisconsin to our troops that we’re behind them 100 percent. I’m excited about the trip and honored to be chosen for this assignment."
Ryan said, "It is our job, as representatives in Congress, to assess firsthand how our operations in the war on terrorism are progressing. This is an opportunity to learn on the ground what impact military and financial decisions made in Washington are having on destroying terrorist organizations."
"Being briefed on what’s next in this war will also be a focus of the mission. If Iraq is the next target, being in the theater of operations will allow us to analyze and address the readiness of our troops," Ryan said. "I am excited to meet and thank our troops, especially the Wisconsinites who are proudly serving our country. We owe them our gratitude for the success they have had and our support for the battles that lie ahead."
Ryan and Green also said they plan to circulate banners bearing the words "Wisconsin is Behind You" throughout their districts during the month, giving constituents an opportunity to sign them and add any personal messages they would like to send U.S. servicemen and women. The two will bring the banners with them and present them personally to U.S. forces stationed overseas for display.
Green and Ryan will also stay the night aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. George Washington, where they will spend time with the crew and discuss operations with U.S. military leaders. The two encouraged any Wisconsin residents who have family serving with the U.S.S. George Washington battle group to contact their offices (Green at 800-773-8579, Ryan at 888-909-7926) so they can have a chance to meet while onboard the carrier. Please see below for a schedule of banner-signing opportunities for area residents.
Ryan and Green will depart August 21 and return August 27. Other details of the trip are classified for security reasons.
