Ryan Votes for Bipartisan Resolution Authorizing Use of Force to Address Iraq Threat
WASHINGTON – After careful consideration and examination of the facts, First District Congressman Paul Ryan today voted in favor of H.J. Res. 114, which authorizes the President to use the United States Armed Forces to defend the national security of the U.S. against the continuing threat posed by Iraq and enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the resolution by a vote of 296-133. The measure is supported by each of the four congressional leaders: Hastert, Gephardt, Daschle, and Lott.
"This is a difficult vote," Ryan said. "When we authorize sending America’s servicemen and women to fight in hostile territory, we do it with heavy hearts, but also with an understanding of the grave threat that makes this step necessary."
"I believe this resolution offers the best chance for peace, because it clearly demonstrates our resolve to Saddam Hussein," Ryan said. "Without it, we know that Hussein will continue stockpiling and developing weapons of mass death, giving safe harbor to terrorists, and tormenting his own people. Meanwhile, the danger for America and our allies will grow even worse."
