Ryan Opposes Drop in Veterans’ Funding, Votes Against VA-HUD Spending Bill

WASHINGTON – Wisconsin’s First District Congressman Paul Ryan today voted against the spending bill that provides funding for the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development (VA-HUD), and Independent Agencies to protest a drop in veterans’ spending compared to the amount designated for veterans in this year’s budget resolution.

According to the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, the VA-HUD spending bill that the House took up for consideration today contains $1.8 billion less for veterans health care services than the Fiscal Year 2004 Congressional Budget Resolution approved in April.

“We need to honor our promises to America’s veterans,” Ryan said.  “They have worked and fought and risked their lives to protect our freedom.  For this service, they have earned quality health care and other benefits.  We put money into the budget to provide for these things, and there’s no good excuse for skimping and providing less health care funding than we budgeted for.”
