Ryan Reports on Visit
to Middle East
Trip to Qatar, Bahrain,
UAE Allowed for Meetings with Troops and
Key Government Officials
Wisconsin’s
First District Congressman Paul Ryan recently returned from visiting the Middle
Eastern nations of Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he
met with government officials to discuss security, democratization and economic
freedom in the region.
The highlight of the trip was having the chance to talk face to face with
several Wisconsin soldiers stationed in the area.
“We
learned so much from being there, and it was a real privilege to visit with our
troops and let them know how grateful we are to them.
We were glad to see that their morale was strong, and they wanted people
to know they believe in what they are doing and they want to be able to finish
the job they started,” Ryan said.
“This
is a region whose future impacts our own future.
If democracy and free markets – and the openness that goes along with
them – can
take root in the Middle East, then terrorists will find it harder to operate and
recruit there.
The chance to talk with government leaders and others in person gave me a
much better idea of the challenges and opportunities that exist.”
During
this information-gathering trip, Ryan visited U.S. Central Command and the
United States’ Fifth Fleet, for briefings and to meet with U.S. troops
including eleven from southeastern Wisconsin.
In Qatar, he attended a conference on democratization and economic
freedom in the Middle East.
Throughout all three countries, Ryan spoke with key government officials,
including the Emir of Qatar, Qatar’s Minister of Economy and Commerce, the
Prime Minister of Bahrain, and Ministry of Finance officials in Dubai (United
Arab Emirates.)
