Ryan Response to President's State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON
– Wisconsin's
First District Congressman Paul Ryan tonight made the following comments
regarding the President’s State of the Union address:
“The
President’s tribute to our troops and all who are fighting for freedom around
the world was moving.
Ultimately, the spread of freedom and democracy is our best hope for
peace and security, so it was a vital message for him to send.
As we watched the Iraqi people voting this weekend, we were inspired and
reminded of the power and potential of liberty.”
“I’m
also glad the President talked about why it’s crucial to reform Social
Security now so the program will be able to help our children have a more secure
retirement, while at the same time honoring its promise to seniors and those
close to retirement.
He needed to communicate that this will not affect today’s seniors, and
he needed to show how this will help younger workers build savings for their
retirement.”
“Anyone
taking an honest look at Social Security’s finances can see that the current
system is heading toward bankruptcy, and this will only get worse as the baby
boomers retire.
Voluntary personal accounts are the key to saving the system for future
retirees and giving younger workers the chance to earn a better rate on their
retirement dollars.
I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress and with the
President to craft a reform plan that ensures all generations have access to a
secure retirement.”
