Congressman John T. Salazar, Third District of Colorado

Transcript: DOD Must Complete Chem Depot Project

“Well for my constituents in Pueblo that is totally unacceptable. I was sent up here with a directive to make sure the destruction of these chemical weapons would take place in Pueblo. I am very disappointed that the department of defense is even trying to study this. As you know, we introduced legislation that would have stopped they from doing this, and I hope that legislation will go forward.”

“I don’t think it is a partisan issue, I think that people understand that this is a matter of national security. We must destroy these chemical weapons as quickly as possible to comply by the treaty date of 2012. Congressman Ben Chandler and I have both been working very closing together to make sure that the Blue Grass Chemical Depot construction continues and so does Pueblo as well.”

“They specifically stated today that they would not incinerate in Pueblo. That they might be thinking about moving them across state lines to incinerate in another state. It’s unacceptable to other states like Utah. Water neutralization is a process that the people of Pueblo and the community have agreed upon, we have to continue that process.”
