BROMWELL, Jacob H. (1848-1924); part of 53rd Congress, 54th-57th Congresses

Jacob Henry Bromwell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 11, 1848. He spent his early childhood in Newport, KY but later attended public schools in Cincinnati. He graduated from Hughes High School in 1864. Following high school graduation, Bromwell taught in the public schools of Cincinnati and southern Indiana for 23 years.

In 1870, Bromwell graduated from Cincinnati Law College but did not gain admission to the bar until 1888, beginning his law practice in Cincinnati. Before that he served as mayor of Wyoming, Ohio, in Hamilton County from 1880-1886. From 1888-1892, Bromwell served as assistant county solicitor of Hamilton County.

In 1892, Bromwell was elected as a Republican to the 53rd Congress from the 2nd District, filling the vacancy left by former Representative John Caldwell who resigned from the position in May of 1894. Bromwell won the general election for the 54th Congress as well later that year. He won re-election the next three Congresses, serving in the House until March 3, 1903. He was not a candidate for nomination in 1902, and instead returned to his law practice in Cincinnati.

From 1907-1913, Bromwell served as the judge of the court of common pleas of Hamilton County. He declined the nomination to continue in that position after 1913 and again returned to practicing law. Bromwell died June 4, 1924, in Wyoming, Ohio, and was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
