Advisory: Passport Processing Delays

UPDATE: Beginning January 31, 2008, the United States will no longer allow oral declarations of citizenship at the border of Canada and Mexico. U.S. Citizens ages 19 and older need to possess documentation that proves both identify and citizenship. For a list of acceptable documentation please visit: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/ready_set_go/land_travel/chnge_in_proced.xml.

You will not need a passport to travel to Canada by car until June1, 2009.

For more updated information on traveling under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) please visit the State Department's website at:
http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html.

UPDATE: Regular service for applications is currently taking 4 weeks and expedited service is taking about 3 weeks. To check the status of your passport, please visit:
http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html.

If you live in the Fourth Congressional District and are traveling within the next 2 weeks and need assistance getting your passport processed, please fill out our online casework request form. One of my constituent services representatives will contact you as soon as possible.

You may also be interested to know I wrote to the State Department to ask that it update the processing times on its website and work to address this challenge quickly. Click here to read the letter.
