Shays Announces Bridgeport, Norwalk to Receive $5,898,565 in Total HUD Funding to Support Housing, Economic Development

Bridgeport, CT – Congressman Christopher Shays (CT-4) today announced the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded the cities of Bridgeport and Norwalk $5,898,565 in grants to help each community continue its housing and economic development programs.

The grants will provide resources for low-income family housing, spur economic revitalization in local low and moderate-income neighborhoods, and provide public services to the homeless and low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS.

“I am grateful the Department of Housing and Urban Development saw fit to award these grants to both Bridgeport and Norwalk,” said Shays. “We have so many groups dedicated to ending homelessness in our region, and both cities can use this assistance to improve services in critical need areas."

“Norwalk welcomes the contributions made by Congressman Shays to Federal understanding of the Housing and Economic Development challenges faced by our city,” added Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia. “As evidenced by this grant, the work is paying off and will provide meaningful support to Norwalk’s efforts to advance the goals of its Community Development Block Grant programs.”

“The City of Bridgeport appreciates the valuable and continued assistance of Congressman Shays and the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development,” said Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi. “These much-needed federal awards will enable the City to administer programs that benefit the City's low and moderate income residents by continuing to create a healthy Bridgeport with a broad range of assets including safe and healthy neighborhoods, affordable housing and other quality amenities which add up to a livable urban environment.”

The funding was provided through the following programs:

Bridgeport: $4,938,979
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG): $3,364,575
Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG): $144,734
HOME: $1,428,931
Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA): $739,000

Norwalk: $959,586
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG): $959,586

HUD allocated four types of grants to help provide families and individuals in Connecticut with adequate affordable housing in safe neighborhoods. The CDBG initiative helps local governments and communities build and rehabilitate affordable housing, as well as address other economic development needs. The HOME grant will help expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low-income families.

The ESG grant will help improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters. Lastly, the HOPWA grant will administer resources for supportive services for low-income persons with HIV/AIDS and their families.
