Shays Announces Greenwich CDBG Grant $953,507 Grant to Support Housing, Economic Development

Bridgeport, CT – Congressman Christopher Shays (CT-4) today announced the Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded Greenwich a $953,507 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

“Community Development Block Grants provide funding to address specific, local needs as determined by each community,” Shays said. “CDBG grants help dedicated men and women improve our communities and provide services to those among us who need them most. Greenwich will use this funding to improve those critical need areas, which will have a tremendously positive impact on its citizens."

Added First Selectman Jim Lash, "CDBG continues to provide critical funding for many of our community and social service agencies. Without them vital services for our children would go unmet."

The CDBG program provides annual grants to states and local units of government to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate income persons. The CDBG program is one of the longest continuously run programs at HUD. The CDBG program provides annual grants on a formula based on poverty, population, housing overcrowding, age of housing, and population growth lag in relationship to other metropolitan areas.

Since establishment of the CDBG program in 1974, CDBG funds have enabled these grantees to achieve significant results in their communities. Funds are used for jobs creation and economic development, public facilities and public services.

Cities with a population of 50,000 or more are eligible for CDBG grants. Smaller cities which are not eligible may apply to the state for funding.
