Shays Statement on
H.R. 3845, the PROTECT Our Children Act
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Christopher Shays (CT-4)
today voted for H.R. 3845, the PROTECT Our Children Act, which
passed the House by a vote of 415 to 2.
Shays is a cosponsor of the bill which establishes the office
of a special counsel for Child Exploitation Prevention and
Interdiction in the office of the deputy attorney general
in the Justice Department. The measure requires the hiring
of additional Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Immigration
and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The following is Mr. Shays’ statement:
Madam Speaker, as a cosponsor of the PROTECT Our Children
Act, I am grateful we are considering this legislation today.
This legislation will create a Special Counsel within the
Department of Justice (DoJ) to design and organize the Departments
child exploitation prosecution work.
The bill will also establish grants to increase the number
of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents dedicated
to protecting children and ensure local authorities have funding
available to create vigorous cyber units with well-trained
officers.
Having a child exploited is a parent's worst fear. This legislation
will strengthen our police force to ensure we can track down
and imprison child sex predators.
Madam Speaker, I urge passage of this legislation.
