What They Are Saying:
Shays Supports Earmark Transparency
Shays makes all his earmark requests
public and believes all earmarks should be able to be challenged
on the House floor
The Connecticut Post: “It's
unfathomable in this age of what is supposed to be open and
transparent government that three-quarters of the 435 members
of the U.S. House of Representatives do not make public their
"wish lists" of funding requests for their home
districts. That's why it's all the more impressive that two
House members from Connecticut - Reps. Christopher Shays,
R-4, and Chris Murphy, D-5,- do make their lists public.”
“Because of its wealth, Connecticut gets shortchanged
in federal funding. We send much more in tax dollars to Washington
than we get back. So, it's reassuring for constituents to
know that their congressman is in the Capitol Hill mix fighting
for the home district.” (Editorial,
4/2/08)
The Stamford Advocate: “In
this age of what is supposed to be open and transparent government,
three-quarters of the 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives
do not make public their "wish lists" of funding
requests for their home districts. Thus it is notable that
two House members from Connecticut - Christopher Shays, R-Bridgeport,
who serves our district, and Chris Murphy, D-Southington -
do make their lists public.” (Editorial,
4/4/08)
The Norwalk Hour: “Two members
of Connecticut’s congressional delegation, Rep. Christopher
Shays, R-4th District, and Christopher Murphy, D-5th District,
have made their lists public. It’s an example that should
be followed by other members of the delegation.” (Editorial,
4/8/08)
Shays has released all of his Fiscal Year 2009 (FY 09) appropriations
requests and they are available on his website.
To further promote earmark transparency, Shays has also signed
H.Res 559, which if it were to gain the signatures of 218
Representatives would force a vote on H.Res. 479. This resolution
would amend House rules to allow all earmarks to be challenged
and debated on the House floor.
