Shays Supports Bipartisan
Border Security Discharge Petition
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Christopher Shays announced
today he has joined a bipartisan effort to demand a vote in
the House of Representatives on legislation to secure our
borders.
“The first responsibility of a nation is to protect
its borders,” said Shays. “As a nation of laws,
we must defend our borders and also enforce all our immigration,
employment and tax laws. Securing our borders should be at
the heart of our national security strategy."
"The bottom line is this legislation has overwhelming
bipartisan support," Shays continued. "It seems
to me we should not delay in bringing this bill to the floor
for a vote."
Shays signed onto a resolution which, if it gains 218 signatures,
will require the Speaker to bring H.R. 4008, the SAVE Act,
up for a vote. Shays is a cosponsor of the SAVE Act, which
has 141 cosponsors, including 48 Democrats and 93 Republicans.
The bill would:
· An increase in border patrol agents by 8,000 over
the next five years; an additional 1,150 ICE agents, 140 Criminal
Alien Program officers, and 250 state and local law enforcement
for immigration support.
· A strengthening of alien smuggling penalties
· Expedited removal of and increased detention facilities
for illegal aliens
· Authority for additional border infrastructure and
aerial vehicles/surveillance equipment.
