What They Are Saying:
Shays Supports Strong Ethics Reforms
Shays offered an amendment
to Office of Congressional Ethics to grant Commission subpoena
power
The Connecticut Post: “Two
of Connecticut's U.S. representatives can take pride in the
fact that they helped bring real ethics reforms to a body
that is often challenged in that department. By championing
a system to bring outside authority into claims of impropriety,
Reps. Christopher Shays, R-4, and Chris Murphy, D-5, have
performed a valuable service.” (Editorial,
3/15/08)
The Advocate: “In a boost for
congressional ethics (which could use a boost these days),
Connecticut Reps. Christopher Shays and Chris Murphy are pushing
to create an independent panel to investigate charges of ethical
lapses among members of Congress. It's a good idea, and deserves
wider support. Independence should be a prerequisite for ethical
investigations on any level.” (Editorial,
3/11/08)
On February 27, Congressmen Christopher Shays (CT-4) and
Mike Castle (DE – At Large) wrote to their colleagues
requesting support for their amendment to H.Res. 895 to grant
the Chairman or Cochairman of the Ethics Commission subpoena
power. H.Res. 895 would create an independent panel with the
power to initiate ethics inquiries.
