This is Congressman Ike Skelton.

During these challenging times, Congress and the President have a responsibility to come together to enact a bold plan to put our economy back on track.

There are two primary goals of this bill, the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment legislation: number one, to save and create jobs; second, to get our economy moving again.

The legislation will put people to work right away and will provide tax relief to 95 percent of American workers. In Missouri's Fourth Congressional District, experts have predicted that as many as 7,000 jobs could be created.

This is not a perfect plan. But, sitting on the sidelines, simply watching our economy deteriorate is not an option. Inaction on our part would undercut America's national security and would imperil jobs, savings, farms, small businesses.

American optimism, ingenuity, and dedication have seen us through many difficult times in our nation's history. I am confident that we will fight hard to restore the American Dream and overcome the challenges this nation faces today.
