Photo Of the Week

Congressman John Lewis is pictured alongside Congressman Vic Snyder with an autographed magazine cover from Life Magazine March 19, 1965

Congressman John Lewis is pictured alongside Congressman Vic Snyder with an autographed magazine cover from Life Magazine March 19, 1965: the historical cover features Alabama troopers awaiting Lewis and over 600 peaceful protesters at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama on March 7, 1965 (Civil Rights - The Savage Season Begins). Lewis, often called "one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced," spearheaded this influential march in Selma. The protesters intended to march from Selma to Montgomery to demonstrate the need for voting rights in the state. The marchers were attacked by Alabama state troopers in a brutal confrontation that became known as "Bloody Sunday." Congressman Lewis presented Congressman Snyder with this memento to thank Congressman Snyder for all of his work to raise more attention among House members and gain cosponsors and support for the Civil Rights Act Commemorative Coin Bill, which passed the House earlier this spring.
