SNYDER ANNOUNCES WINNER
OF 2005 CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION LITTLE ROCK, AR – Lawrence Li of Shirley High School in Van Buren County is the winner of Arkansas's 2nd District 2005 Congressional High School Art Competition. Congressman Vic Snyder announced the winner at the opening of the exhibition at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Fine Arts Building on Monday, May 9th. The annual Congressional High School Art Competition gives one student from each Congressional District in the nation the opportunity to have his or her work displayed in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Lawrence’s winning entry is a graphite piece entitled “I Know Everything About this World.” The 2005 Congressional Art Competition had entries from more public and private schools this year than ever before—78 entries (up from 47 last year) from Benton, Bryant, Capital City Christian, Central Arkansas Christian, Central, Episcopal Collegiate, Hall, Harding Academy, Harmony Grove, Lutheran High, Mills, Mt. Saint Mary’s Academy, Mt Vernon–Enola, North Pulaski Academy, Oak Grove, Pulaski Academy, Shirley, and one home school entry. In a cooperative agreement with Congressman Snyder, UALR administered and judged the competition. The winner was awarded a custom-made frame to display his painting and three round trip tickets to Washington, DC to attend the opening of the national exhibit at the Capitol on June 14. “The UALR Art Department always does a great job in helping with the competition, and we truly appreciate all of their hard work,” said Congressman Snyder. “I was very pleased to see donations of round trip fares from Southwest Airlines, a customized framing from Work of Art in Little Rock, and gift certificates from Barnes and Noble, all donated to our student winners again this year." Three entries received an Artistic Excellence award: Ashley Morrison of Oak Grove, Kaitlin Emerson of Mt. Saint Mary’s, and Melissa Martinka of North Pulaski. Each was awarded a $25 gift certificate. All 78 entries will be on display to the public in the UALR Gallery until June 3rd. **A photo of Lawrence or the other winners & Congressman Snyder is available by calling Jennifer, 501-324-5943. -30- |
