LINCOLN, PRYOR, SNYDER ANNOUNCE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL TRAINING GRANTS FOR UAMS, UCA

Washington, D.C. - United States Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, and Representative Vic Snyder announced today that the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded grants in the amounts of $261,138 for UAMS and $23,128 for UCA for the training of nurses and other health care providers.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will receive $261,138 through the Quentin Burdick Program for Rural Interdisciplinary Training. The Burdick program is intended to support training that prepares health care providers for practice in rural communities, which make up more than half of the country's health professional shortage areas. Some focuses of the program include: demonstrating and evaluating methods that improve access to cost effective, comprehensive health care; providing health care services to people in rural communities; expanding research into rural health care issues; and recruiting and retaining health care providers in rural areas.

The University of Central Arkansas in Conway has been awarded $23,128 through the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship program, which aims to improve the distribution of health profession workers in underserved areas. The funds will help to meet the costs of traineeships and will pay all or part of the costs of the tuition, books, fees, and other costs of the program of advanced nurse education.
