LINCOLN, PRYOR, SNYDER ANNOUNCE $72,000 GRANT TO BRYANT SCHOOL DISTRICT

WASHINGTON, D.C. - United States Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, and Representative Vic Snyder announced today a $72,000 federal grant for the Bryant School District under the Carol M. White Physical Education Program.

The Carol M White Physical Education Program provides grants to educational agencies and community-based organizations to pay 90 percent of the cost if initiating, expanding, and improving physical education programs designed to assist students in meeting state standards for physical education. Grant funds may be used to provide equipment and support for physical education activities and to train teachers and staff.

"Teaching young people the fundamentals of physical education is an excellent way to promote lifelong health and wellness," Sen. Lincoln said. "I'm delighted that students and teachers in Bryant will benefit from this valuable grant funding."

"Physical education is critical for young children to develop important skills and attitudes for a healthy lifestyle," Pryor said. "This grant enables students in Bryant the opportunity to learn about the many benefits of exercise at an early age."

"Bad habits start early. But so can good ones. Physical education programs are important in teaching people at an early age healthy lifestyles in proper nutrition and exercise," Congressman Vic Snyder said.

Programs funded under this grant may provide for one or more of the following:

  • Fitness education and assessment to help students understand, improve, or maintain their physical well-being.
  • Instruction in a variety of motor skills and physical activities designed to enhance the physical, mental, and social or emotional development of every student.
  • Development of, and instruction in, cognitive concepts about motor skill and physical fitness that support a lifelong healthy lifestyle.
  • Opportunities to develop positive social and cooperative skills through physical activity participation.
  • Instruction in healthy eating habits and good nutrition.
  • Opportunities for professional development for teachers of physical education to stay abreast of the latest research, issues, and trends in the field of physical education.
