GOODWIN OF HENDRIX RECEIVES TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD

WASHINGTON, D.C. - United States Representative Vic Snyder announced today that Dr. Thomas Goodwin of Hendrix College in Conway was honored with the U.S. Professor of the Year Award in Washington, DC.

Dr. Goodwin was one of four national winners named at an award luncheon Thursday at the National Press Club. Dr. Goodwin, who teaches chemistry, received the Outstanding Baccalaureate College Professor of the Year award. Three other categories include Community College, Master's University or College and Research and Doctoral University.

Dr. Goodwin says that his teaching has been enriched by collaboration between the college and a nonprofit elephant sanctuary nearby, Riddle's Elephant and Wildlife Sanctuary in Greenbrier. His research students have studied the reproductive cycles of female elephants and chemical communication. Another of his interests is the practice and teaching of "green," or environmentally friendly, chemistry. Goodwin is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, former President of the Council on Undergraduate Research, and past Chair of a Gordon Research Conference. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Ouachita Baptist University and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Arkansas.

Since 1981, the U.S. Professors of the Year program has rewarded outstanding professors for their dedication to teaching and commitment to students. It is the only national program to recognize college and university professors for their teaching skills. The program, sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, seeks to increase awareness of the importance of undergraduate instruction at all colleges and universities.

Note: An electronic photograph of Dr. Goodwin is available upon request.
