Dear Friend:
I am writing to invite you to join me at one of my town meetings on Saturday, June 4th to come and share your views on the many issues facing Congress. The times and locations for those meetings are below.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to share with you my position on an important issue recently debated in Congress.
Just this week, I voted for the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, a bill authorizing expanded federal funding for stem cell research and increasing the number of stem cell lines eligible for research. The bill continues the current ban on federal funding for any form of cloning and requires the informed consent of donors. It passed the House and is expected to pass the Senate, but faces a veto threat by the President.
Those who believe that it’s morally superior to discard a single cell in a freezer rather than to use it to help millions of Americans with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes, should by all means refuse to donate their excess IVF embryos. But I do not believe they have the right to tell the rest of us that we can’t alleviate the suffering of millions. And I do not believe they have the right to ban California researchers from collaborating with their colleagues at the National Institutes of Health.
These and other important issues are facing Congress. Please come and share your views.
