Dear Friend:

Numerous crises confront America. Gas prices are going through the roof. Global warming is intensifying. Health insurance premiums are rising. Median wages are falling. Schools are underperforming. Violence is destabilizing the Middle East. Trade deficits are increasing and the national debt is spiraling out of control.

With all of these problems, you’d think Congress would be busily legislating solutions. But we aren’t. Instead, Congress spent much of the last week debating the following legislation.

Bill

Summary

Final Tally

How I Voted

H.R. 5683

A bill to require the federal government to purchase City-owned land in San Diego in order to get around a judge’s ruling requiring the removal of a 43-foot-high cross.

PASSED

349-74

NO

H.R. 2389 -- Pledge Protection Act

Legislation to bar any federal court, including the Supreme Court, from hearing a case challenging the constitutionality of the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, effectively letting Congress serve as its own Judicial Branch.

PASSED

260-167

NO

S. 3504 -- Fetus Farming Prohibition Act

A bill to make it illegal to use an embryo for stem cell research that was gestated in an animal or created for the sole purpose of research. This is already illegal in current law, but was passed again to distract from the President’s veto of stem cell research.

PASSED

425-0

YES

H.J.Res. 88 -- Marriage Protection Amendment

A bill to amend the Constitution to prohibit gay and lesbian couples from getting married or receiving any of the rights of marriage (inheritance, hospital visitation, etc.).  A constitutional amendment requires the support of 2/3 of the House to pass.  The Senate had already considered the measure, and it failed to get the required 2/3 of the vote. Therefore, it is clear that the amendment will not move forward.

FAILED

236-187

NO

It is one thing to disagree on how to solve the nation’s problems, but quite another to completely ignore them.  I disagree with the divisive priorities that are being pursued by the majority party in Congress. I think is is time for a new direction, one that focuses on improving the lives of all Americans rather than pandering to the hate of a few.  I hope you agree.

Sincerely,

Pete Stark
