STEARNS "THE HORRENDOUS ACT OF PARTIAL-BIRTH ABORTION NEARS THE END"

HOUSE APPROVES BAN ON PARTIAL-BIRTH ABORTIONS

WASHINGTON, OCT. 2, 2003 - "It is nearly impossible to comprehend an act that takes away the life of an infant just moments before he or she draws a first breath," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). "But that is the nature of a partial birth abortion -- it is in fact infanticide. That such a procedure is legal in our nation calls into question our ability to refer to ourselves as civilized."

Stearns joined the House today in approving S. 3, the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. The measure makes it illegal in the United States for a physician to perform a partial-birth abortion. "It is estimated that at least 2,200 to 5,000 partial-birth abortions are performed each year in the United States," said Stearns. "Over and over again Congress has voted to outlaw this inhuman practice and each time this legislation was vetoed by President Clinton. Now we have a President who has pledged to be pro-family and support this ban." With passage of S. 3 by the House and Senate, it now goes to the President for his approval.
