WASHINGTON, MAY 22, 2008 – “We ask our military men and women to endure hardships and sacrifice to defend our nation and they deserve our full support,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). I am pleased that we are giving our military the training, equipment, and benefits they require to complete their missions.”
The House approved H.R. 5658, the Defense Authorization Act, which authorizes $601.4 billion for defense programs. The measure includes $70 billion in emergency funds to support ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Explained Stearns, “This measure authorizes $2.6 billion for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, $947 million for up-armored Army High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled vehicles, and $783 million for personal body armor. It also provides for a 3.9% pay increase for military personnel and $25.4 billion for defense health-care programs while blocking the plan to raise TRICARE and pharmacy user fees and deductibles.”
