WASHINGTON, APRIL 22, 2009 – “Bloomberg News reported last month that the federal government has spent, lent, or guaranteed $12.8 trillion in addressing the economic crisis,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Sixth). “In addition, the Administration, the House, and the Senate have put forth budget proposals that double the national debt over 5 years and triples it over 10 years. I do not see ho we can spend, tax, and borrow our way to prosperity.”

The National Taxpayers Union (NTU) is a nonprofit, non-partisan citizen group that tracks the fiscal policies of Congress. In one study, the NTU measures the net annual cost of legislation supported by each member of the House and Senate. In the most recent study (1st Session of the 110th Congress), Stearns ranked ninth in the House for fiscal responsibility. Stearns supported bills that would increase federal spending by $2.2 billion, while he supported legislation to decrease federal spending by $24.2 billion. A new NTU study on the net annual cost of legislation is expected in July of 2009.
