WASHINGTON, JUNE 25, 2009 – “When we ask the member of the armed services to risk their lives in defending our nation, we must ensure that they receive the equipment, training, and support they deserve,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Sixth). “This measure authorizes funding for ongoing military operations, improvements in the quality of life for our troops and their families, and essential weapons programs. In addition, it provides for a 3.4-percent military pay raise. It also authorizes $5.5 billion for mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles, $1.5 billion for up-armored Humvees, $1.3 billion to upgrade military vehicles, and $1.4 billion for jamming improvised explosive devices.”

The House voted today to approve H.R. 2647, the Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010. The measure authorizes $608. 5 billion for defense programs, an increase of four percent from the previous year. The measure also blocks the use of Department of Defense funding to release or transfer detainees held at the facility in Guantanamo Bay without meeting several conditions.

Added Stearns, “Recognizing the need to increase our military manpower, H.R. 2647 authorizes 15,000 more Army troops, 8,000 more Marines, 14,650 more Air Force personnel, and 2,477 more Navy personnel. It also expands Tricare health coverage to reserve component members and their families for 180 days prior to mobilization, and provides $2 billion for family housing programs to improve military life.”
