WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 17, 2009 – The Air Force Association of Florida (AFA/Florida) named Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala) the Legislator of the Year. According to the AFA/Florida, the selection is based upon knowledge of AFA issues, involvement with local chapter members, service in the military, committee assignments, and office tenure. Stearns, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, also helped to create the Congressional Air Force Caucus and serves as its co-chair. The Air Force Association of Florida will honor Stearns on Saturday, September 19th at 10:00AM at the Ocala/Marion County Veterans Park Pavilion, 25th Avenue & E. Silver Springs Blvd., in Ocala.

“I appreciate working with AFA/Florida on advancing the causes of the local chapters in support of the U.S. Air Force, as well as its active personnel and veterans,” said Stearns. “I am honored to be named Legislator of the Year and I look forward to continuing my efforts on behalf of the Florida and the national Air Force Association.”

Stearns continued, “Through the Congressional Air Force Caucus, I am helping to educate fellow members on the importance of maintaining global air superiority. The Air Force has spent the past two decades engaged in continuous combat operations and is utilizing an aircraft fleet that averages nearly a quarter of a century in age—with some planes in the inventory dating back to the Eisenhower Administration. This issue of aging aircraft combined with major budget constraints places the Air Force in a very difficult position of balancing risk against very tight fiscal confines. Our national security depends on a modern Air Force.”
