WASHINGTON, AUG. 4, 2007 - In light of the collapse of the bridge in Minnesota, we have learned that 73,784 of the nation's 597,340 bridges are structurally deficient, as was the bridge in Minneapolis," said Rep. WASHINGTON, AUG. 2, 2007 - " Since 1985, the number of engineering degrees earned in our nation has declined by 20 percent, and there is a similar trend in the sciences and math," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "Maintaining our nation's technological edge in a global economy requires a greater commitment to the technical and scientific fields."  Stearns today joined in approving H.R. H.R. 2272, the America COMPETES Act, which authorizes an increase to  $43.3 billion over three years in funding for several different agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST).

WASHINGTON, AUG. 1, 2007 - "Although I support reauthorizing SCHIP, this measure would spend well over $20 billion a year of American taxpayer's money to irresponsibly expand a children's health care program to include childless adults, families making over $80,000 a year, and illegal aliens," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "Even more troubling is that this legislation will disproportionately harm racial minorities and rural senior citizens by taking away funds from Medicare Advantage, a successful and lower-cost option for health care for seniors, in order for the federal government to insure adult men and women who have the ability to work and get health care from their employers."

WASHINGTON, JULY 26, 2007 - "Although federal courts have upheld broadly the right of business owners to require employees to speak English on the job, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a lawsuit against the Salvation Army for requiring employees to speak English at work," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL).  "In this instance, the Salvation Army gave two employees one year to learn English to function on the job.  However, they failed to try to learn even some basic English and were let go.  The EEOC is seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in monetary damage to compensate these two employees for the emotional pain, suffering, and inconvenience they suffered by being asked to speak English to the best of their ability while on the job."

WASHINGTON, JULY 18, 2007 --  "Although our nation was segregated during World War II, nearly 1,000 black Americans stepped forward to serve in a special Army Air Corps program to train as pilots," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "The training took place in Tuskegee, Alabama, and they became the famed Tuskegee Airmen, who went on to establish an astounding record in combat.  In March, some 300 Tuskegee Airmen and their families attended an event in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., receiving the Congressional Gold Medal.  However, not all of the Tuskegee Airmen attended this event and I would like to ensure that they receive the honors they earned."

WASHINGTON, JULY 6, 2007 - Today Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) called on the House Energy & Commerce Committee to investigate allegations of rampant steroid use in professional wrestling. Said Stearns, "Between 1985 and 2006, 89 wrestlers have died before the age of 50.   Of course, not all of these deaths can be attributed to steroid use.  However, this abnormally high number of deaths of young, fit athletes should raise congressional alarms.  Millions of young wrestling fans, for better or for worse, look up to professional wrestlers as role models.  The Anabolic Steroid Act of 1990 makes it a felony to use and distribute these drugs.  Congress needs to investigate the recent events and find out how big of a problem steroid use is in professional wrestling.  Steroid use is a major public health problem that deserves Congress' full attention."

WASHINGTON, JUNE 6, 2007 - "Through a series of hearings I had held as Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee, we learned about spyware, a program that is secretly loaded onto a victim's computer that works to defraud not only them, but also to corrupt the Internet as a safe and secure space for commerce," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL). "This led to the introduction of the Spy Act, which would stop these deceptive and prohibited practices such as keystroke logging, web page hijacking, and unsolicited ads that cannot be deleted." Stearns rewrite of the Spy Act eventually passed in the full House in 2005, but the Senate failed to act.

WASHINGTON, MAY 31, 2007 - "One of my greatest responsibilities is nominating young men and women to the United States Military Academies," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "The competition for these appointments is extremely high, as are the quality of the nominees."  Stearns announced today the nine students from Florida's Sixth Congressional District who have been accepted to one of the U.S. Military Academies.
