STEARNS VOTES AGAINST MASSIVE EXPANSION OF GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE
8.01.07
WASHINGTON, AUG. 1, 2007 - "Although I support reauthorizing SCHIP, this measure would spend well over $20 billion a year of American taxpayer's money to irresponsibly expand a children's health care program to include childless adults, families making over $80,000 a year, and illegal aliens," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "Even more troubling is that this legislation will disproportionately harm racial minorities and rural senior citizens by taking away funds from Medicare Advantage, a successful and lower-cost option for health care for seniors, in order for the federal government to insure adult men and women who have the ability to work and get health care from their employers."

STEARNS PRESENTING CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDALS TO TUSKEGEE AIRMEN 7.18.07

STEARNS CALLS ON CONGRESS TO INVESTIGATE STEROID USE IN PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING 7.06.07
WASHINGTON, JULY 6, 2007 - Today Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) called on the House Energy & Commerce Committee to investigate allegations of rampant steroid use in professional wrestling. Said Stearns, "Between 1985 and 2006, 89 wrestlers have died before the age of 50.   Of course, not all of these deaths can be attributed to steroid use.  However, this abnormally high number of deaths of young, fit athletes should raise congressional alarms.  Millions of young wrestling fans, for better or for worse, look up to professional wrestlers as role models.  The Anabolic Steroid Act of 1990 makes it a felony to use and distribute these drugs.  Congress needs to investigate the recent events and find out how big of a problem steroid use is in professional wrestling.  Steroid use is a major public health problem that deserves Congress' full attention."

Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "The training took place in Tuskegee, Alabama, and they became the famed Tuskegee Airmen, who went on to establish an astounding record in combat.  I look forward to presenting the Congressional Gold Medal to Hal King, one of the Tuskegee Airmen, for his service to our nation."

HOUSE APPROVES STEARNS' RESOLUTION HONORING THE NATION OF LIECHTENSTEIN
6.18.07
WASHINGTON, JUNE 18, 2007 - "Having visited Liechtenstein, I remain impressed with its fascinating history and the people's commitment to freedom," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL).  For over 200 years, Liechtenstein has maintained a constitutional monarchy with a vibrant parliament.  Although Liechtenstein has 34,000 people, and is the size of Washington, D.C., it accomplishes far more in social, political, and financial influence than its size would indicate."

STEARNS OFFERS RESOLUTION URGING IRAQI NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO CANCEL OR DELAY PLANNED RECESS
6.07.07
WASHINGTON, JUNE 7, 2007 - "American troops continue to expand their military operations in Iraq along with Iraqi units, and it is unconscionable that the Iraqi National Assembly is even considering a two-month recess starting in July," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "We are looking to the Assembly to make progress in oil-revenue sharing and other steps toward stabilizing Iraq.  These goals are far more important than taking time off."

HOUSE APPROVES SPY ACT PROTECTING COMPUTER USERS FROM DECEPTIVE PRACTICES
6.06.07
WASHINGTON, JUNE 6, 2007 - "Through a series of hearings I had held as Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee, we learned about spyware, a program that is secretly loaded onto a victim's computer that works to defraud not only them, but also to corrupt the Internet as a safe and secure space for commerce," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL). "This led to the introduction of the Spy Act, which would stop these deceptive and prohibited practices such as keystroke logging, web page hijacking, and unsolicited ads that cannot be deleted." Stearns rewrite of the Spy Act eventually passed in the full House in 2005, but the Senate failed to act.

WASHINGTON, MAY 30, 2007 - Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala), Deputy Ranking Republican Member of the House Veterans Affairs' Committee, is participating in a Memorial Delegation to honor fallen service members buried in American military cemeteries in France, Luxembourg, and Italy.  "It is vital that we honor the sacrifice of the men and women of our armed forces who lost their lives in defense of our freedoms," stated Stearns.  "Many of our fallen troops are now buried overseas, near the battlefields where they lost their lives, and I am committed to remembering and honoring their gallant service."

STEARNS VOTES TO APPROVE TROOP FUNDING BILL WITHOUT SETTING DATE FOR WITHDRAWAL 5.24.07

WASHINGTON, MAY 24, 2007 - "Our troops need to know that they have our support, especially as they are engaged in ongoing military operations," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "It is imperative that they receive the resources to complete their missions, and this measure provides them funding through the end of the current fiscal year (through September 30, 2007).  The certainty of funding through the current fiscal year allows our commanders to plan and prepare for the future.  In addition, it includes benchmarks for the Iraqi government to measure progress in achieving victory."

WASHINGTON, MAY 23, 2007 - "As Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee, I held hearings on the high price of gasoline, especially focusing on pricing after disasters such as hurricanes," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala).  "In response, I developed legislation that, for the first time, gave the federal government authority to combat price gouging on the sale of gasoline and diesel.  This language was included in H.R. 3893, the Gasoline for America's Security Act, and passed by the House in 2005.  Although I am committed to protecting consumers from unfair trade practices and pricing schemes, the legislation before the House today will not help consumers and will hurt small business owners."

STEARNS JOINS HOUSE IN APPROVING BILLS TO HELP AMERICA'S VETERANS 5.23.07
