Rep. Susan Davis Calls for 2009 to be "Year of the Military Family"

Davis represents many military families in San Diego

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) today honored the contributions and sacrifices of America’s military families with her vote in favor of a resolution urging President Barack Obama to declare 2009 as the “Year of the Military Family.”

“Our military’s ability to perform its mission abroad is directly related to the strength of our families at home,” said Davis, a member of the House Armed Services Committee.  “Without families willing to sign up for military life alongside their soldier, sailor, airman or marine, we would not have the tremendous all-volunteer force we have today.”

The resolution also encourages the American people to share their appreciation for the sacrifices military families make on behalf of the nation.

There are nearly 2 million family members related to Armed Forces, and more than 1 million family members related to reservists. There are almost 1.2 million children who have at least one parent in the military.

As Chairwoman of the Military Personnel Subcommittee, Davis plays a leading role in shaping policy benefiting military personnel and their families, many of which reside in her San Diego congressional district.
