Rep. Susan Davis Announces $110 Million to Build New San Diego Courthouse
Construction funds in omnibus spending bill signed by President
WASHINGTON – San Diego’s new downtown federal courthouse came a bit closer to reality when President Barack Obama signed the omnibus appropriations bill today. Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) led the effort to include $110 million in the bill to cover construction costs.
“This project has been “shovel ready” for a while,” said Davis. “The additional funding will allow us to move on to the next phase for this much needed judicial building. The judges and staff have been handling large caseloads with limited space. The new building will help relieve some of the caseload, provide much needed space, and implement critical security measures.”
Hundreds of prisoners are processed through the downtown federal courthouse, one of the busiest border courts the nation.
The Government Services Administration, the agency charged with construction of the federal courthouse, has made past attempts to collect bids but had to suspend the process because of rising construction costs.
This brings the total federal funding for construction to $368.7 million, which will allow the government to open the project up for bidding.
The new building will be an annex and located across from the existing federal courthouse on Broadway.
