Rep. Susan Davis Supports Responsible Budget to Give American Economy a Boost
Job training and infrastructure prioritized
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susan Davis voted for a fiscally responsible budget in the House of Representatives that emphasizes aiding the economy as well as increases for health care and education. The Budget Resolution (H. Con. Res. 312) for Fiscal Year 2009 was approved by the House by a vote of 217-202.
Rejecting the Administration’s cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, the budget would also expand health care coverage for children. It increases resources for scientific innovation and energy initiatives. The budget resolution meets these needs and reduces budget deficits each year until they are eliminated by 2012.
“This budget reflects the priorities of the American people, especially with an emphasis on helping our country’s sagging economy and creating jobs,” said Davis. “We provide critical investments in education, job training and our infrastructure, and seek to fulfill a promise to expand health care coverage for our children. Most importantly, the budget resolution meets our nation’s priorities in a responsible manner.”
With the economy in mind, the budget increases funds for math and science education and research, renewable energy programs and training for “green” collar jobs, and invests in highways and water projects.
Education, job training and social services programs get a $7.1 billion boost in the budget over the President’s proposal.
The budget addresses the needs of our veterans by rejecting new fees and increasing veterans funding by $3.6 billion.
It provides robust funding for defense while shifting funds for nuclear nonproliferation programs, readiness, and quality of life improvements for our servicemembers and their families.
“We will not only meet our defense needs but we will continue to work toward upholding our commitment to the men and women who serve and their families,” added Davis, Chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Military Personnel.
