Rep. Susan Davis Hears from San Diegans at Economy Forum
200 San Diegans attend event at USD
SAN DIEGO – As the nation faces the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, Congresswoman Susan Davis held a forum on the economy today for her constituents.
Nearly 200 people gathered at the University of San Diego to hear from Davis and local experts on the economy, housing, and business. People were given an opportunity to share their concerns and ask questions.
“There is a lot of uncertainty about our economic future,” Davis said. “So many families are struggling to make ends meet. I know that people have many questions and concerns. I wanted to give them an opportunity to be heard and hopefully get some answers to their questions.”
The national unemployment rate is 8.1 percent but those numbers are higher in California. The unemployment rate for the state has increased 11 months in a row – now standing at 10.5 percent. It is the state’s highest unemployment rate since 1983.
Compared to the rest of state, San Diego County has not been hit as hard. However, the unemployment rate has jumped from 7.5 percent in December to 8.8 percent in February. The San Diego region has been impacted heavily by the housing crisis gripping the nation.
In her opening remarks, Davis highlighted the efforts of Congress to halt the economic slide and turn the nation’s economy around. She also talked about some of the personal stories she has heard during this recession.
Participating in the forum were Alan Gin, Economics Professor at the University San Diego; Gary Gallegos, Director of SANDAG; Ruben Garcia, District Director, Small Business Administration; Nick Macchione, Director of County’s Health and Human Services Agency; and Sue Reynolds, CEO, Community Housing Works.
