Rep. Susan Davis Introduces Resolution Honoring Military Family Support Volunteers
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susan Davis introduced a resolution (H. Res. 408) in the U.S. House of Representatives recognizing the efforts of volunteers supporting America’s military families.
The resolution honors the unsung heroes of the military – working without pay and often using their own resources – who serve as liaisons between military command and military families.
In San Diego, Davis has worked closely with Navy Ombudsmen and Marine Key Volunteers on a regular basis.
“It is an understatement to say that I have been amazed by their dedication. These volunteers spend hours and hours each week to help other military families,” said Davis, Chairwoman of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee. “Without question military families face unique challenges compared to the average American family. But without the efforts of these volunteers, military life for military families would be much more difficult – especially for those who are new to the service.”
Since 2001, nearly two million active duty and reserve service members have deployed in support of overseas contingencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. Deployments are a difficult time for service members and their families. Since family readiness equals mission readiness, Congress must recognize the important role these men and women play in our national defense.
Inadequate communication between units abroad and families at home cause unnecessary stress on our service members and their families and can harm the overall readiness of the nation’s armed forces. Family Readiness Volunteers and Ombudsman help reduce the uncertainty around deployments by keeping families informed and service members focused on their mission.
