REP. SUSAN DAVIS CALLS ON CHINA TO
PRESSURE SUDAN TO STOP GENOCIDE

House passes resolution urging China to act on violence in Sudan

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susan Davis supported legislation urging China to pressure Sudan to crack down on violence which has resulted in the death of 400,000.  The House of Representatives passed H. Res. 422 on a unanimous vote of 410-0.

“It’s important that a significant player on the world stage, such as China, acknowledge the violence and atrocities occurring in Darfur,” said Rep. Davis, who is a cosponsor of H. Res. 422.  “China can use its economic relationship with the government of Sudan to have a significant impact on Sudan’s cooperation in ending the genocide.”

The resolution (H. Res. 422) calls upon China to publicly acknowledge and condemn the atrocities taking place in Darfur.  It urges the Chinese to cease all military sales to the government of Sudan and to take immediate steps to suspend economic cooperation and investment in Sudan until the Sudanese government stops its attacks on civilians and complies with all U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Since 2003, the Sudanese government has fought rebel groups in the country's Darfur region, an impoverished area populated by non-Arab Africans.  The Sudan Liberation Movement has attacked government troops accusing the government of neglecting the region.

Arab militias, know as the Janjaweed, loot and burn African villages and engage in a systematic pattern of attacks against civilians, including arbitrary killings, abductions, looting, torture, and rape.

The government of Sudan provides support for the Janjaweed and has also launched air and ground attacks against civilians and villages in Darfur.

Davis has supported numerous bills to end the genocide in Sudan and has supported efforts to increase humanitarian aid.
