Rep. Susan Davis Secures $1.9 Million for San Diego Crime Fighting Efforts

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susan Davis secured $1.9 million for San Diego gang prevention, communication upgrades, and crime lab improvements in an appropriations bill passed by the House of Representatives today on a bipartisan vote of 259 to 157.

“This legislation represents key investments in our priorities, including keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe,” said Davis.  “San Diego has recently enjoyed lower crime rates and the funding in this bill will allow law enforcement to continue that trend.  The communication upgrades will not only aid local law enforcement in preventing crime, but will provide greater ability to communicate during incidents of public disaster.”

The San Diego programs with federal funding in the bill:

  • $350,000 for San Diego Crime Lab Technology – City of San Diego: Equipment enhancements to increase cost-efficiency and effectiveness of forensic science work, including print identification, chemical analysis, and digital photography.

  • $1.2 million for Regional Communications System Upgrade – San Diego County Sheriff: Improve on data sharing, alerts and notifications among officers.  The funding will also go toward converging state, local and federal communication systems.

  • $200,000 for Regional Gang Enforcement Collaborative – San Diego County Sheriff: A program designed to promote cooperation and communication among street-level officers from numerous different law enforcement jurisdictions to reduce violent crime and gang activity.

  • $200,000 for Gang and Drug Investigations and Prosecution – San Diego County District Attorney: Improve the Probation Department’s ability to keep track of gang-involved youth who are under a court order to register with their local law enforcement agency and to purchase laptop mounts for automobiles and breathalyzers for the Gang Suppression Unit to use in the field.

The Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 2847) also makes significant investment in scientific research and innovation.  Specifically, the legislation:

  • Helps students succeed in a global job market by investing in science, technology, engineering and math education.

  • Renews our commitment to reduce global climate change with funding for research.

  • Invests $6.9 billion in the National Science Foundation for the most promising scientific research and innovation.

H.R. 2847 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
