Rep. Susan Davis Supports Extending Unemployment Benefits
California’s unemployed qualify for the 13-week extension
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Susan Davis voted to extend employment benefits for 223,041 unemployed workers in California. The House of Representatives today approved the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act (H.R. 3458) to provide a 13-week extension for states with unemployment rates of 8.5 percent or higher.
Twenty-five states fall into that category, including California, which has an unemployment rate of 11.5 percent.
“We know that job creation tends to lag behind when an economy goes from recession to recovery,” said Davis, a member of the House Education and Labor Committee. “This extension will help those who are having trouble finding employment. This will allow them to provide for their families as they continue to look for work.”
Nationwide, more than 300,000 individuals will have their benefits expire at the end of September. One million more people will lose their unemployment assistance at the end of December 2009.
The extension would apply to workers who have been employed at least 20 weeks prior to being laid off. H.R. 3458 passed the House on a vote of 331-83.
