House Passes Davis Resolution Honoring Military Family Volunteers and Ombudsmen

Washington, DC – The House of Representatives today passed a resolution sponsored by Rep. Susan Davis (D-San Diego) recognizing military family support volunteers and the selfless service they provide to the members of our Armed Forces and their families.  H. Res. 408 passed the House on a voice vote.

“It is truly an honor to have this opportunity to recognize America’s military family support volunteers,” said Davis, chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Military Personnel.  “These men and women give selflessly of themselves for no pay and little recognition, and often contribute their own resources to help those in need.”

Each branch of the armed forces has organized its military unit family support volunteers into effective networks of support – Air Force Spouses Together and Ready volunteers (STARs), the Army Family Readiness Volunteers, the Marine Key Volunteers (KVs), and the Navy Ombudsmen.

Davis recalled a story of how a Navy Ombudsman was able to reassure families when the USS New Orleans, a ship stationed in Davis’s district, was involved in a collision.  The Ombudsman was able to get notice to the loved ones of sailors serving on the New Orleans that all were safe.

When Davis first came to Congress, it was a Navy Ombudsmen in San Diego who helped her understand the complex issues faced by our all-volunteer force.

“The family volunteers are not only a valuable resource for the military families they serve, but they are also a great source of information for me and my office,” Davis said.
