Statement by Rep. Susan Davis on House Passage of the Health Care Reform Bill

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) released the following statement in support of the health care reform bill, the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3926).  H.R. 3962 passed the House of Representatives on a vote of 220-215.

“I support the Affordable Health Care for America Act because it begins to change the dynamic of the health care system in our country to one that puts patients first.

“It’s time to create a system that is more responsive to the patient, because people do not feel embraced by the health insurance industry in our country under the current system.

“This bill will provide more access to health care for all Americans, because health care should not be denied, taken away or haggled over at the will of insurance agencies.    Under this bill, patients can’t be discriminated against for a pre-existing condition or treated differently based on gender.

“The main focus of this bill is where it should be--on consumer protections in the health care industry.  We work hard to protect consumers in other industries, and we should offer and maintain similar protections when it comes to health care, which provides the most necessary of human needs.  This is why the Consumers Union recently endorsed the health care proposal, and the AARP and AMA have as well.

“The process of reforming our health care system has put the well-being of Americans and their families at the center of debate, as it should.  I have heard from so many constituents, and they have said loud and clear that the system needs to change – that they can’t afford for us to do nothing.  I support this reform because health care needs to be about them – it needs to be about the patient again.”
