Rep. Susan Davis Acts to Halt Genocide in Sudan

House passes Sudan divestment legislation

WASHINGTON – In response to the genocide in the Darfur region, Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA) moved to put economic pressure on the government of Sudan to end the violence.

“Ending this crisis will take a worldwide effort,” said Davis.  “The United States and the international community must apply serious pressure on the government of Sudan to make a significant and dedicated effort to stop the genocide. Putting a halt to the genocide is just the start.  The international community needs to promote the recognition and respect of human rights, as well as ensure the economic and political policies that will prevent future genocides”

The Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act (S. 2271) bars federal contracts with companies that do business with the Sudanese government. It also authorizes states to do the same and to divest assets from the country.  S. 2271 was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives.

Davis is a cosponsor of the House version of the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act (H.R. 180), which was approved in July.

The U.S. has been the largest contributor of humanitarian assistance to the people of Darfur, having provided over $1 billion.  In June, Davis voted for the State-Foreign Operations Appropriations Act (H.R. 2764) to provide another $949 million for humanitarian assistance in Darfur.

In Sudan, about 400,000 have died and over 2 million have been displaced, including hundreds of thousands of refugees in neighboring Chad.

Davis strongly urged President Bush to sign S. 2271.
