Congresswoman Susan Davis Votes to Protect Consumers from Increasing Taxes on Mobile Services
Washington – Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) supported a 5-year ban on local and state governments from imposing new taxes for wireless services. The Wireless Tax Fairness Act (H.R. 1002) passed the House of Representatives on a voiced vote.
“The increasing disparity between taxes on mobile services compared to other goods and services is disconcerting,” said Davis. “We need a time out until we can find a solution that protects consumers from unfair taxes on mobile services while allowing state and local government the ability to raise necessary revenue.”
Local and state taxes on wireless services have increased four times faster than taxes on other goods and services in the years between 2003 and 2007. For example, consumers in Nebraska pay 17% more in state and local taxes for wireless services compared to other goods and services.
