Congresswoman Susan Davis Opposes Cuts to Renewable Energy Investments

WASHINGTON – With China and India on the verge of becoming giants in renewable energy technology, Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) opposed cuts to our nation’s investment in renewable energy. The House version of the energy and water appropriations bill slashes investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency by 29 percent and would risk America falling behind global competitors.
“San Diego is a key player in the development of renewable energy,” said Davis. “With a consistent investment in these programs, San Diego could become a leader in this technology, and that means jobs for our region. If America is going to reduce its dependency on oil, San Diego has the potential to lead the way.  Unfortunately, the bill before the House would put the brakes on that effort. ”
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, San Diego has attracted more than $1 billion in venture capital and other investments for renewable energy.
The bill only includes $1.5 billion for renewable-energy and energy-efficiency programs, which is a 29% cut in funding from last year. Funding would be cut for research on solar energy, wind, geothermal, and building-efficiency programs.
The energy and water appropriations bill passed the House on a vote of 255-165.
