March 24, 2006 NO CHANGES AT BEMIS SITE, USPS TELLS TANNER WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. John Tanner said today the United States Postal Service does not plan any changes at its Bemis site. The USPS will not study whether to close the Bemis post office, Tanner learned from communication with postal officials this week. At Congressman Tanner’s urging, the Postal Service made a public statement on the issue. “This facility is important to the community of Bemis, and we are proud to report that it will continue to operate with no changes,” Tanner said. “Closing the site would have been a disservice to Bemis residents, and the work load would have had to be shifted to other facilities.” The USPS statement reads: "The United States Postal Service has no plans at this time to close the Bemis Post Office. A previous study, completed approximately one year ago, led to the decision to keep this office open. Due to the recent retirement of the Bemis postal employee, local officials considered requesting a study to determine possible changes in this office; however, no such study will take place at this time." Tanner represents Tennessee’s 8th Congressional district in West and Middle Tennessee. # # # Contact: Randy Ford, 202.225.4714 |
