WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. John Tanner said thousands of families in the 8th Congressional district may be eligible for an earned income tax credit they have not before claimed on their income taxes.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit for working families. Last year, almost 16,000 8th district families eligible for the EITC did not claim it, according to the IRS. The average EITC benefit is $1,900.

“Working families in our district in west and middle Tennessee could miss out on as much as $33 million in tax credits for which they are eligible, simply because they don't claim them,” said Congressman Tanner, who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, which deals with tax matters. “As we all work on our income tax returns between now and April 17, I hope Tennessee taxpayers will be sure they are receiving every tax credit they have earned.”

Tanner represents the 8th Congressional district, which includes Benton, Carroll, Crockett, Dickson, Dyer, Gibson, Haywood, Henry, Houston, Humphreys, Lake, Lauderdale, Madison, Obion, Stewart, Tipton and Weakley counties, and portions of Montgomery and Shelby counties.
