TANNER, HOUSE PASS BILLS TO HIRE MORE COPS WASHINGTON – Congressman John Tanner supported the following two bills, which passed the House of Representatives Tuesday. Safe America Roads Act of 2007. The House of Representatives, with Tanner’s support, agreed to limit the authority of the Bush Administration to allow Mexican trucks to operate on U.S. highways. COPS Improvement Act of 2007. This bill will help hire up to 175 new police officers and sheriff’s deputies and 10 more school resource officers in Tennessee’s 8th Congressional district – covering all or part of 19 counties – which Congressman Tanner currently represents. Communities in the 8th district have been able to hire 410 new officers and deputies since President Clinton signed the COPS program into law in 1994, but the Bush Administration had limited funding in recent years. “This move will help go even further toward keeping west and middle Tennessee neighborhoods safe,” Congressman Tanner said. “As we all know, local officers are the first responders who are crucial to our nation’s security.” The 8th District includes all of Benton, Carroll, Crockett, Dickson, Dyer, Gibson, Haywood, Henry, Houston, Humphreys, Lake, Lauderdale, Madison, Obion, Stewart, Tipton and Weakley counties, as well as portions of Montgomery and Shelby counties. # # # Contact: Randy Ford, 202.225.4714
