TANNER'S COMMITTEE PASSES BIPARTISAN
SOC. SEC. IDENTITY THEFT PREVENTION BILL

WASHINGTON – Congressman John Tanner supports a bipartisan identity theft prevention bill that unanimously passed the House Ways and Means Committee, on which Tanner serves. The bill, which seeks to limit access to other people’s Social Security numbers, will next be considered by the full House.

“Tennesseans and all Americans expect that their private information will stay private and not be shared without their consent and then used against them to steal their identity or for other forms of fraud,” Tanner said. “We believe these common-sense steps will help protect consumers from the improper access to, and abuse of, their personal data.”

The Social Security Number Privacy and Identity Theft Prevention Act would restrict the sale, purchase and public display of the SSN by government and business to make it less accessible to identity thieves. It would also mandate stricter sentences for convicted identity thieves.

Tanner represents Tennessee’s 8th Congressional district in West and Middle Tennessee. He serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and as chairman of the U.S. delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
