TANNER CONGRATULATES JOE HILL ON NEW POSITION

Retires as longest-serving district aide in TN history

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. John Tanner congratulated long-time friend and District Director Joe Hill on his appointment by Governor Phil Bredesen to the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole.

“Joe Hill has been an integral part of the 8th district offices for 35 years,” Tanner said. “Over that time, he has worked with an outstanding staff in the district to help thousands of west and middle Tennesseans resolve their day-to-day issues with Medicare, Social Security, veterans benefits and other individual needs. He has also been a diligent advocate for enhancing the quality of life for rural communities throughout our area, ensuring neighborhoods have access to all the resources available from the federal government for vital infrastructure and human capital projects such as water and sewer systems, roads, schools and job creation.

“My personal relationship with Joe spans longer than 35 years,” Tanner continued. “He will always be my friend first and also my political partner. Betty Ann and I congratulate Joe and Susan and their family as Joe accepts this exciting new opportunity to continue his service to our state.”

“I am very pleased that Joe Hill has agreed to serve our state as a member of the Board of Probation and Parole,” said Governor Bredesen. “With his proven commitment to public service, Joe brings the type of experience and leadership that are so important to the board's efforts and achievements. We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber agree to serve the State of Tennessee in this capacity.”

Upon his retirement, Hill is the longest-serving Congressional district aide in Tennessee history, having served the 8th district for 35 years. He first served as field assistant and district director to Representative Ed Jones from 1973 until Jones’ retirement in 1989, and then as district director for Representative Tanner from 1989 to 2008.

Joe and Susan Hill live in Union City and have three grown children: Adam and wife Niketa Hill of Nashville, Judith Hill of Nashville and Travis Hill of Union City.

The 8th Congressional district currently includes all of Benton, Carroll, Crockett, Dickson, Dyer, Gibson, Haywood, Henry, Houston, Humphreys, Lake, Lauderdale, Madison, Obion, Stewart, Tipton and Weakley counties, as well as portions of Montgomery and Shelby counties.
