March 27, 2009 TANNER
MAKES SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO ALAMO – U.S. Rep. John Tanner presented a Certificate of Congressional Recognition to Alamo Assistant Police Chief Kevin Sugg for his acts of bravery in rescuing three children from a burning Crockett County day care facility in December. “Kevin’s actions were nothing short of heroic,” Congressman Tanner said. “We all appreciate his quick response and his selflessness in stopping an incident that would have been tragic to our community. We are proud to present Kevin with this special recognition.” On December 17, Officer Sugg was off-duty and driving along State Highway 88, on his way to meet a fellow officer to shop for Christmas gifts, when he noticed smoke. Thinking it might be coming from burning leaves, he passed by, then back-tracked to make sure the situation was under control. Instead, he found that the smoke was coming from a daycare facility, so he quickly radioed for help and ran to the building. Upon hearing the screams of children inside, he entered the burning structure on hands and knees. The heavy smoke blinded him, so he listened and felt for the children. One by one, Officer Sugg located three toddlers, age 3 and younger, and got them to safety. He and the children then were rushed to Madison County General Hospital for treatment, with one child being flown on to Vanderbilt Hospital. Thanks to the quick actions of Officer Sugg, Crockett County emergency responders, and medical personnel in Jackson and Nashville, all four have recovered. Officer Sugg traveled to Washington D.C. recently to receive the prestigious National First Responder Award, co-sponsored by the E911 Institute and the National Emergency Numbers Association. Officer Sugg has more than 22 years of law enforcement experience. He has been employed by the City of Alamo Police Department for five years, recently having been promoted to Assistant Chief. He and his wife, Kristi, reside in rural Crockett County, near Halls, with their two children, Anna and Jameson. Anna is a Crockett County High School senior, and Jameson is a freshman. Tanner represents the 8th Congressional District in West and Middle Tennessee. # # # Contact: Randy Ford, 202.225.4714
