This funding will help Milan Army Ammunition Plant fulfill its role as a "Munitions Center of Excellence" as declared in the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 2005 by increasing the production of 40mm mortar rounds.

Milan has produced the 40mm round since the grenade’s development during the Vietnam War. Its production is the centerpiece of the arsenal’s excellence in ammunition manufacturing. The 40mm rounds are especially in high demand in current conflicts because of their effectiveness in close combat situations.
