Physical Fitness Center, Fort Campbell Recipient: Fort Campbell Army Base, Fort Campbell, KY Amount requested: $14.4 million Project description: Construct a 44,347-square foot Army Standard Physical Fitness Center at Fort Campbell to serve soldiers and family members on the south side of the Post. The facility will include locker rooms, cardiovascular training, gymnasium, circuit training, free weights, storage and support areas. This project is required to provide a consolidated physical fitness facility for approximately 5000 military personnel and their families. This facility would provide the area and equipment necessary to maintain the required fitness levels for active duty personnel. This facility will also increase the quality of life for military dependents. This is a new area developed for a Brigade Combat Team. Current facilities are makeshift, old and physically separated. Fort Campbell has six permanent Physical Fitness Centers with only two rated green. Four centers have exceeded their useful life expectancy as mechanical and structural issues have made modernization uneconomical. If this project is not provided, Fort Campbell will continue to suffer from a shortfall in adequate fitness training and conditioning. Furthermore, soldiers housed in new barracks for a Brigade Combat Team will be required to find transportation to the already overcrowded existing facilities. Fort Campbell currently fails to meet the community demand for physical fitness support facilities, falling well below the Army's requirement for Physical Fitness Centers. Adding this Physical Fitness Center would be a great step in reducing Fort Campbell's current deficit. |
