Appropriations Requests

Chapel Complex, Fort Campbell

Recipient: Fort Campbell Army Base, Fort Campbell, KY

Amount requested: $14 million

Project description:

Construct a 1,200-seat chapel/ family-life multi-purpose facility at Fort Campbell which includes a worship center, activity/ fellowship center, chaplain family life and pastoral care center, resource center, multimedia center, multi-purpose education classrooms, kitchen, storage areas, restrooms and circulation area. This project would support the Army Family Covenant by improving family readiness by providing a supportive environment where they may thrive.

Fort Campbell's Chapel program has 72 chaplains and over 300 volunteers supporting the installation with 17 religious services on a weekly basis. Currently, the installation has a substantial deficit of adequate worship, religious education, and family life facilities.

The installation's religious program operates in seven chapels (three temporary and four permanent) and five other temporary facilities. The temporary structures are World War II construction dating to 1942. These facilities are widely scattered on the installation, causing worshipers to travel long distances despite various soldiers having small children and unable to afford automobiles.

In addition, the existing chapels at Fort Campbell are small and no one location is of adequate size to host a large religious program, memorial service, or fellowship event. The chapels housed in temporary World War II facilities and trailers are plagued by inflexible spaces, failing plumbing and mechanical systems, and structural deterioration. As a result, Fort Campbell currently fails to meet the community demands for physical religious support facilities.
